If you ride regularly it’s inevitable that crashes will occur. Hopefully, like most crashes, it’ll be a case of getting up and dusting yourself down, or dealing with a little road rash. More serious crashes do happen, of course, and with most deaths and traumatic brain injuries occurring from head impacts, there’s no question about putting on a helmet.

Today’s helmets are so light and comfortable, you barely notice that they’re there and on warmer days they do a top job of keeping you cool. Some feature inner skeletons to increase the strength of the inner EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) shell allowing for more vents without compromising protection.

While the EPS shell is designed to take direct linear impacts, a new safety measure found on some helmets is MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact System). It helps with rotational impacts by allowing the EPS shell to move up to 15mm over an inner liner. This reduces the energy transfer that can cause concussion or more serious brain injuries, but it does add weight.

Achieving the perfect helmet fit is easier than ever with simple retention systems that use dials or push and slide set-ups. When fitting, keep the helmet level on your head with the front just above the eyebrows. Then adjust so it’s snug yet comfortable but not moving around.
