Black flies ‘guardians of the North’
Because black flies are true flies, unlike dragonflies and butterflies, it is two words.
It seems that black flies probably have some ecological uses besides hummingbirds feeding their young, and a couple weeks of being the major food of trout every year. Now, my father called them the "Guardians of the North" when it comes to second homers buying or building yet another unnecessary disruption of the natural world. Native kids don't even notice them.
