Alive and kicking
In the pre-digital heyday of film photography, we were blessed with an amazing assortment of different film stocks. While today’s array is considerably narrower, it is continually evolving and once again we have an ample selection that caters to many tastes.
Over the last few years, we have seen several exciting new or relaunched products. The most eagerly anticipated release was Kodak’s Ektachrome E100 but notable others include Fujifilm’s reformulated Neopan Acros II, Kodak’s T-MAX P3200, Ferrania’s P30 and Ilford’s Ortho Plus.
As well as a diverse contribution of ‘new’ films from smaller brands, another significant release was Lomography’s LomoChrome Metropolis, claimed to be the first new colour negative emulsion in more than five years.
The importance of continuity
New releases and wide choice validate the fact that analogue film photography is alive and kicking. Yet it is the continuity provided by mainstream manufacturers such as Ilford and Kodak that creates the platform for other brands to enter the market with confidence.
