As the sound of three strong heartbeats filled the room, I gasped out loud.
‘Triplets,’ I beamed, thrilled, even though I wouldn’t be the one to take them home. Yet, when I looked over at the babies’ mummy and daddy, I saw no tears of happiness, nor heard any squeals of excitement. Instead they were stony faced, and moments later they got up – without so much as a word to me – and left the room. I was utterly stunned, and desperately worried for the surrogate babies growing inside me.
