GREAT OCEAN ROAD RESIDENCE

much more breathtaking than this one, so any bathroom that looks out to it has to be equally as commanding. Architect Rob Mills has delivered: this is a calm, confidently executed space where natural materials and restrained spatial planning allow The brief for the entire house was to create a family home of refined luxury that would feel as if it was immersed in the wilderness of this spectacular spot on the Victorian coastline. The bathroom was no exception. To be able to bathe in an environment such as this is a rare privilege, one usually only encountered in six-star resorts. The scale of the bathroom needed to match the scale of the view. The outlook also shaped the design, both through floor-to-ceiling glass and reflected in the large-scale mirror. The house is perched on a clifftop overlooking an iconic surf break and marine park, all of which we wanted to capture as a natural backdrop. Reclining in the bath, you are at one with the environment beyond. In our busy lives today, the act of bathing is considered a precious luxury, so we really wanted to hero the bath with its central placement. When spending time in this bathroom, the overwhelming feeling is one of absolute contentment. In terms of tones and textures, we borrowed from the landscape beyond, so your eye flows seamlessly from the outside in. The layering of hard finishes, leathered limestone flooring and warm timber grain on the ceilings adds to the sense of sanctuary. The Cristalli Bianco marble floor and vanity pair beautifully with the warmth of the European oak timber joinery. The Boffi bath is the centrepiece. Its placement reflects modern furniture design, which focuses on key pieces being located in the centre of the room rather than at the edge. They were extremely pleased, so much so that they have commissioned us to do another house. The bathroom encapsulates our vision for the overall architecture and design: countering traditional coastal design with a new, natural luxury that complements and celebrates the environment. This is a private space with a deep connection to the landscape, a space where you can relax and truly be restored.
