BELLEVUE HILL HOUSE

welcoming in feel, and equipped to perfection for a passionate cook, this Sydney kitchen designed by Gillian Khaw (above left) and Tania Handelsmann might just be the ultimate entertainer, says Tania. To create a soulful kitchen In each of our projects we seek to balance historical references and detailing with the contemporary to bring warmth and visual interest to a space. The completed kitchen is a casual yet elegant design with an exuberant Mediterranean feel and a rich and diverse materiality that coexists happily alongside the home’s heritage splendour. The green colour palette was agreed upon to help bring the outdoors in but it also happens to be the client’s favourite colour. The terrazzo and chequerboard marble floor tiles are traditional materials that speak to the age of the building, but they’ve been applied in a contemporary manner. Tadelakt plaster curves around the rangehood and island to create a tactile, earthy aesthetic that softens the harder stone surfaces. The contemporary brass tapware and hardware balance the rustic with a touch of luxury, while the brass gallery rails offer a subtle bistro reference. The commercial-grade appliances by Wolf, Sub-Zero and Winterhalter. It was critical that the kitchen function at a very high level for large-scale entertaining. Our client is thrilled with the way the new bay window protrudes towards the lush ‘living’ garden wall and makes the kitchen feel as if it’s part of the outdoors. Meanwhile, as she desired, the island bench has become a focal point for social activity within the home and a natural extension of the dining room.
