Racist humans and alien creatures are two of the many monsters encountered in HBO’s slick new horror series, Lovecraft Country. Based on the best-selling novel by Matt Ruff, the story whisks audiences back to 1950s America in a show that blends a fright-filled mix of fantasy and science fiction with pulp noir and real-world horror.

Genre fans are in for a treat with hordes of fantasy and horror homages, including the’ Jonathan Majors). “We start off with a big pulp monster dream in Atticus’ head, which lays the groundwork for where we go in the story with aliens, monsters and magic,” explains executive producer and showrunner, Misha Green. “It’s a very thematic beginning. You always want to start with a bang.”
