In last month’s tutorial, we covered the basics of FM synthesis, from the fundamentals of frequency modulation to how to use one operator to dynamically change the timbre of another, and create simple and arresting bass and keys patches. Now that you’re fluent in frequency modulation, it’s time to take things up a notch. Here, we’re covering how to make more involved patches that take advantage of multiple-operator setups. Specifically, we’re going to recreate one of the most beloved synth bass patches of all time: the DX27’s Solid Bass preset.

Released in 1985, the DX27 was one of the many FM synths Yamaha created in the wake of the DX7’s enormous success. While it was a cheaper and more portable take on FM, with only four operators as opposed to the, Orbital’s , and Haddaway’s seminal .
