Autumn arrived overnight. Out at dawn this morning and hunting for a roebuck, I found the landscape dull and dusty and reeking of change. The rowan berries were garish and red in the dew and a brood of young buzzards were stretching their wings and mewling to one another above the bog myrtle. I paused to pick a handful of blaeberries and suddenly realised that the summer had gone.
