Flashback 40

In this, merely the second installment of Flashback 40, things get messy. If you recall, the goal of this column is to revisit issues published exactly 40, 30, 20 and 10 years ago this month. However, the magazine’s current publishing frequency (9 issues annually) doesn’t align with the publishing frequency in previous years (from 6 to 12 issues annually). Since the current GAMES WORLD OF PUZZLES doesn’t publish in November, I’ll be reviewing October and November issues in this month’s column.

20 YEARS AGO: OCTOBER 2000

You could always count on Games to acknowledge the changing seasons, and October issues were routinely flavored with a Halloween or autumn theme. In this issue, a Halloween quiz by Pam Wylder tested readers’ knowledge of monsters, and Emily Winslow’s family mystery, “Ghost Hunter,” occupied seven of the color pages.
