Patrick Walters still dreams about the fish. Weekly, he says, he thinks about the monster that jumped 10 times on its way to his boat, hanging on by a single treble hook attached to a Rat-L-Trap. Fifteen years ago, while fishing with his dad in a tournament on South Carolina’s Santee Cooper, Walters felt his line go tight and his breath leave his lungs as a bass larger than any he’d ever seen — bigger than the two 10-pounders and the 11-pounder he’s caught since — soared into the sky.
