Liberalising Botswana’s beef industry

Botswana’s beef industry is transitioning from a state monopoly to a liberalised market for exports. The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) Act (1965) describes the institution as a state monopoly that facilitates beef and live cattle exports, while sustaining and retaining the broader interests of the entire livestock industry in Botswana.

However, the BMC Transition Act (2019) is set to repeal the BMC
