WILD BUCKS From ABOVE
Throughout fall and early winter, I spend lots time in a helicopter conducting aerial deer surveys, gathering data to assist landowners with whom I work. And while I’m in the air, I’m privileged to see more bucks than most sportsmen see in a lifetime of hunting.
Viewing the flat Texas brush country from above often convinces inexperienced observers that they’ve seen every deer on a property. However, that’s just a snapshot of a deer herd, because many deer go undetected — especially older, sedentary bucks that remain ensconced in the jungle of thorn-scrub, refusing to run. Deer must usually be mobile for observers in helicopters to see them. However, many old wraiths remain bedded — and thus unseen — because they’ve been intimidated by years of aerial surveying and even U.S. Border Patrol aircraft,
