OAK OASIS

Chipmunks and pine squirrels scurry across the forest floor 20 feet below me as I secure my safety belt to the red oak’s trunk and settle in for an afternoon hunt.

This is the only red oak in the corner woodlot. It’s surrounded by small white pines and dozens of white oaks. Its trunk diameter is probably 15 inches, and some of the white oaks are more than twice that. Not kidding. These babies are huge.
