CARBURETOR FLOATS: WHICH SYSTEM IS BEST?

You’ve probably gotten some advice from a friend or mechanic as to which brand or type of carburetor to use for driving a VW off-road. There are similar concerns when hard cornering or drag racing are involved. Let’s dive into the numbers to see which float design is best for you!

Diving into my bins of carburetor parts, I decided to analyze float systems from various Weber, Dellorto, Solex, and Zenith carburetors. Some of the older carbs (like the Weber IDA) have heavy brass floats, while most of the newer designs are made from some form of plastic bonded to metal. The weight of the floats varied dramatically, as did their size and volume.
