The Gowers Report still rings true, 70 years on

ON June 23, 1950, a report of formative importance to the modern history of the country house was published. The is familiarly known as the Gowers Report after its chairman, Sir Ernest Gowers. A retired civil servant with wide experience, he was also the author of a(1948), which was subsequently revised, expanded and reprinted. Athena wonders whether, at this extraordinary moment in time, the report would merit the same treatment.
