Pick and mix

AN artist whose work one rarely sees, but whom I have always greatly admired, is Edwin Alexander (1870–1926). He was born in Edinburgh, the son of Robert, an animal and occasional landscape painter, and he was much influenced by a family friend, Joseph ‘Creeps’ Crawhall, the Northumbrian artist, some of whose favourite subjects are indicated by the nickname.

After long stays in North Africa, the younger Alexander settled at Inveresk, where he kept a large private zoo to supply
