VOICE True

Speaking on the phone rather than face-to-face is becoming part of the so-called new normal, but when we talk to singer-songwriter Arlissa, who is spending lockdown in her Los Angeles apartment, we receive some technical difficulties. “This is why… I didn’t want to FaceTime,” she laughs, after taking it upon herself to call us back on the app. A video appears of her under her duvet – although it is still only 9am in LA: “I’m like, ‘Hello’ still in bed.”

The 27-year-old moved to the States from London two years ago. “When I came out here, I clicked a bit more with the producers I worked with,” she tells us. Plus, the weather is good, which allows her to go hiking. “I need to be active, for my mind.”

Of course, currently, she isn’t getting out much at all. “I woke up this morning, and thought, I haven’t done anything in two months,” she says jovially. “I feel there are two types of lockdown people, those that are super inspired, I have friends that have become really fit; but I’ve done literally the opposite.”

The rest is well deserved because, although 2020 has been an onerous year, it’s still had positives for Arlissa, who releases her debut album The Broken-Hearted , this summer. “Ahhh,” she says, showing a peace sign up to the camera. “I’m really excited.”
