GOLDEN AFTERGLOW

FAF DE KLERK sent social media into overdrive and inspired a unique craze in the immediate aftermath of the Springboks’ World Cup triumph.

The scrum-half ‘broke the internet’, as they say, when pictures emerged of him celebrating in the winning changing room wearing nothing but a pair of budgie smugglers in the colours of the South African flag. What added to the ‘trending’ social media moment was that some of the images also showed de Klerk interacting with Prince Harry while clad in just his colourful swimwear.

When the Springboks went on a trophy tour across South Africa, several fans lined the roads wearing similar garments as they imitated de Klerk’s look. In the weeks to follow, the Sale Sharks scrum-half even conducted an interview with Chris Ashton and Danny Care in which all were humorously wearing the now-famous gear.
