Sweet bounty

There are lots of ways you can add some fruit trees, shrubs and vines to your garden, be that in a dedicated orchard, espaliered on fences, fanned across walls, grown in containers, or planted among ornamentals. As with all gardening, it is important to select fruiting varieties that are appropriate for the soil and conditions of your garden. Ensure you plant according to their requirements for sun, shade and drainage, as well as water, feed and mulch as required; in a few years you will be reaping the reward of a fresh, organic harvest.

Plan now for how you can add fruit to your garden. Bare root trees should be planted from November to early spring, while container-grown plants can be planted any time of the year, but it is best done in winter.
