Diana Serra Cary
iana Serra Cary, 101, a 1920s silent film child star known as “Baby Peggy” who in later life became a writer and biographer, died on Feb. 24, 2020, at home in Gustine, Calif. Born Peggy-Jean Montgomery in San Diego on Oct. 29, 1918, she was discovered by Hollywood at 19 months, and by 1924 the “Million-Dollar Baby” was earning $1.5 million a year starring in and the 64-minute feature (remade in 1936 with the next big child star, Shirley Temple). Peggy’s father, Jack Montgomery, was a cowboy who became a stuntman and a double for Tom Mix. Diana (she changed her name in the late 1930s) wrote about him and other Hollywood cowboys in the article “From the Old Frontier to Film,” in the October 1994 . Cary wrote three more articles for the magazine. Her books include (1975), (1978) and (1996). The documentary debuted in 2012.
