There’s an undeniable frisson that comes with exploring a celebrated filmmaker’s early work. Especially when it’s presented by connoisseur’s label Criterion, here collecting five meticulously restored films the Irishman auteur made between 1963 and 1978.

As those dates indicate, this isn’t merely a compilation of shorts dating from before Marty Lite and 1964’s were made while he was still at film school. But two others – 1974’s and 1978’s – are documentary shorts produced in the wake of the success of and respectively. And standing between these two pairs of related films is the highly provocative, avant-garde 1967 Vietnam War metaphor  something of an outlier for the typically apolitical director.
