 Alan Bleasdale was a schoolteacher when he wrote a story about a football-mad teen, to help his pupils learn how to read.was a funny, surreal but often bleak series in which the titular hero becomes obsessed with trying to get a trial at Liverpool, while Kenny Dalglish sporadically turns up in some dream sequences. It took so long for Bleasdale’s story to be made for TV that Scully’s icon was originally meant to be Kevin Keegan, who departed Liverpool in 1977.
