If you would indulge me for a moment, this is the 100th column I have written on the subject of lead synth soloing – an amazing milestone that I am thankful to the magazine to have supported me to achieve. To commemorate I am going back to artists that I have covered in past columns to celebrate their skills and influence on us all.

Steve Winwood

Throughout the 80’s Steve Winwood was playing synths, and using them as a soulful lead instrument (1980), “Slowdown Sundown” (). It’s a country-blues ballad with a masterful synth solo starting at 2:46. Winwood nails the tone, the feel, the notes, and most importantly the soulful bends.
