How do I reduce the size of my backups?

Time Machine backs up the whole of my internal SSD. Even when little has changed in my Home folder, it backs up files, consuming space on the backup disk. How can I use that space more efficiently?

Although Time Machine’s pane offers some options which can reduce the amount that’s backed up, it’s primarily intended to back up whole volumes and startup disks.
