DIGITAL STARS Nikon D1

The Nikon D1 was aptly named – ‘D’ for digital, ‘1’ for the first digital single lens reflex (DSLR). True, there had been DSLRs before the D1, but this was the first built from the ground up by a single manufacturer, rather than by one manufacturer adapting another’s film camera. The D1 also broke a price barrier that brought digital photography firmly to the attention of professional photographers. It might not have truly been the first DSLR, but it certainly represented the shape of things to come.
