CLASSIC REPOWERS INTO 21ST CENTURY
The clean common-rail efficiency of 6LY440 engines has given a Halvorsen 1970s flybridge cruiser an engine room to be proud of.
Palmyra, a stately Halvorsen 48 flybridge cruiser that has privately entertained on Sydney waterways since its launching in 1973, has been fitted with Yanmar 6LY440 common-rail engines. These engines are proving popular across multiple boating sectors with 324 kilowatt (440mhp) @ 3,300rpm, giving Palmyra a 25 knot top speed and a comfortable, efficient, 18 knot to 20 knot cruising speed in easy conditions.
Palmyra’s new owner, with a background in marine engineering and superyachts himself, purchased her around twelve months ago and soon discovered old V8 turbo diesels were struggling to deliver 20 knots. All was removed, along with original fuel tanks and running gear
Wakeford Marine Services, Power Equipment’s appointed Yanmar sales and service marine dealer stewarded the refit. “There was around four months of work on the job itself, and countless hours in planning,” said Quintin Wakeford of Wakeford Marine Services.
Quintin is particularly impressed by the fuel efficiency and warranty available with the 6LY440. The engine utilises the same 6LY2A engine block that has been a favourite of multiple boating sectors for years.
