State coroners rarely make public statements – instead mostly reserving comments for hearings and inquests, when they recommend how similar incidents may be avoided.

But South Australian coroner David Whittle bucked the trend last month when he issued a public warning about inflating tyres on multi-piece and split vehicle rims.

He did so at the request of a grieving family, after formally recording that a man had died of “severe traumatic brain injury”
