UNNATURAL APPOINTMENTS
What is DEFRA up to? I cannot believe it has appointed Marian Spain as the new chief executive of Natural England (NE). This is the person who, as caretaker chief executive, oversaw the General Licences disaster last spring. It doesn’t seem that NE has improved on that performance with its handling of the General Licences this year, or with its failure to renew the consent for wildfowling on the Humber Estuary.
There have also been four new appointments to the board of NE, none of whom seem to have much of a background in country sports. Is this a deliberate tactic by DEFRA to appease anti-shooting groups?
