the economy improved steadily around the world during the 1950s, Volkswagen put the gears in motion to complement the Beetle by producing a larger model: the Type 3. The company ended up offering four versions, not counting the convertible prototypes. They included the Notchback, the Fastback and the Squareback, along with the Type 34 Karmann Ghia. The Type 36 station wagon, aka Variant in Europe, happened to be the best seller; most came from Germany (over 1.2 million between 1961 and ’73), though factories in Brazil and Australia produced them
