With the opening of the grouse season nearly upon us, and partridges imminent, many will be polishing their guns, putting a crease in their tweeds and looking forward to an outing. But how many will have polished their shooting skills? While some shooters spend a small fortune on their sport, they seem to baulk at the idea of paying a relatively small sum for a shooting lesson.

People with knowledge of grouse will be aware that their numbers can fluctuate from season to season, something that is largely dependent on what the weather does in the spring. Released redlegs are a bit more reliable. In an ideal world the once prolific grey partridge would pepper the countryside
