Revved up
It’s 2007 and the war in Darfur, west Sudan, continues into a fourth year. The Sudanese military and Janjaweed militiamen are running amok. Several hundred thousand are estimated to be dead from either combat, starvation or disease. Mass displacements and coercive migrations have forced millions into refugee camps or across the border creating a humanitarian crisis. As early as 2004, US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, described the situation as genocide.
Over 4,750 miles away in the Chelsea Arts Club, an historic private members’ club for artists in the heart of London, the ‘clack’ of snooker balls being cued around the table in the bar can be heard in the furthest pockets of the building.
