THE LEGAL MINEFIELD OF SAFETY CHAINS
Q Good afternoon team, Safety chains are compulsory on all trailers/caravans, but I have seen lately that there appears to be an increase of van owners utilising ‘safety chain hooks’ instead of the old recommended ‘D shackle’.
Are these safety chain hooks legal? My local towing store stated, “A van must be hooked up by correctly labelled weight-rated D shackles”, and said if you have an accident your insurance company may not accept your claim due to this issue.
I will continue to use my weight-rated D shackles as recommended as I am relatively new to caravanning — my wife and I just purchased 2018 Kokoda Aussie Spirit and tow using a 2012 Ford Ranger. It’s an ideal combination for towing.
Can you shed any light on this issue please?
