I grew up in a time when wastefulness was akin to a capital offence. At worst it resulted in banishment to bed, or at best seemingly endless hours seated at the dining table reluctantly munching through the last morsel on my plate. This mantra of waste not want not, that so infuriated me as a child, has of late proved a useful grounding.
