Nothing marks the arrival of the great British summertime quite like Wimbledon, when long, sunny days, strawberries and cream, jugs of Pimm’s and the thwack of tennis balls take over our lives for a fortnight. As the world’s best tennis players – as well as Hollywood stars, royalty and dedicated fans from across the globe – descend on SW19, it becomes the hottest ticket in town, with hundreds of people even camping out in the famous queue to try to secure tickets for the following day’s play.
This year, the event has become another casualty of the coronavirus lockdown. Former British No. 1 Annabel Croft, now a regular commentator on BBC coverage of the tournament, says: “The whole country comes to a standstill when Wimbledon is on. I will miss it this year, definitely. No question.
