ColRegs: AIS concern

Your article asking if the ColRegs need to change (YM, February 2020) is excellent and I loved your potted history of their evolution. I’m sure you are aware that there are many more regulations or amendments well overdue for a revision; after all, you can still legally burn a barrel of tar or oil drum for distress but not use a modern laser flare!

However, a far greater point that needs consideration concerns problems with AIS. You are right that too few motorsailing yachts display an inverted cone and of course too many fishing boats display a permanent basket, but we have a potentially worse situation with small-craft AIS.
