A native of damp, shady streams and rocky gullies in Wales and, the herb of sleep, in Welsh druidic lore-has made its way from gardens to walls and roadsides around the UK. With four overlapping, yellow petals on nodding heads atop slim stems from June to August, it's the logo of political party Plaid Cymru and attracts nectar-loving insects. The county flower of Meirionnydd or Merioneth, it has caused confusion over the years: originally classified as a poppy () by Linnaeus, it was later given its own genus, , where it was joined by the blue Himalayan poppies. Recent analysis, however, revealed it's more closely related to European poppies, after all.
