FLOWERING from June right through to late autumn, with semi-evergreen foliage; easy to grow, colourful and hardy – penstemons tick a lot of gardening boxes. Even in a modest plot, they really do earn their keep.
Featuring tall spires that bear many flowers, they add a hefty dose of summer colour and there’s a good range of hues to choose. If you want to inject some drama, try the bold ruby reds of ‘Garnet’ and ‘Etna’, or the dark purples of ‘Raven’. Or stick to options that bloom in lavender, pale pink or white – the likes of ‘Osprey’, ‘Dorothy Wilson’
