Rebellion on a wild frontier
On 14 November 1880, Cape colonial forces under Commandant Baron Wilhelm von Linsingen clashed with the Thembu near two hills known as the Amabele Entombi.
The clash, which resulted in the death of the baron and his 16-year-old son, Ernest, epitomises the violence, terror and often tragic consequences of 19th-century frontier policies.
