Over the many years of VW production, many types, diameters, and lengths of head studs have been produced. The af termarket has some modern ones as well. Navigating your options and selecting a good set of studs will keep you from having a frustrating installation.

All the oldest head studs were created in 10mm diameter, and this continued all the way through 36HP, 40HP, 1300cc and 1500cc engines. These studs were threaded directly into the magnesium engine cases using a 10 x 1.5mm threaded tap.
