Backfire

I am a 16-year-old 11th-grader in Raleigh, North Carolina. I have recently become interested in automotive restoration as a future career path. My father and my grandfather are both auto-restoration hobbyists and subscribers to Hemmings Motor News. Seeing them work on older cars and eventually getting my own car that my father restored with me, a 1981 Porsche 924, made me realize my interest and passion for restoring classic cars. I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know of any auto-restoration apprenticeships or schools in the North Atlantic or Southeastern regions of the country. I would also be interested in any part-time jobs for people with little to no experience that are closer to my location, if you know of any. I am hoping to expand my knowledge on auto restoration and find work in the profession, and maybe even start my own business in the future.

Thanks for writing, Joseph. It’s always great to hear from young people like you representing the next generation of car enthusiasts. A good first stop on your journey would be the RPM Foundation at www.rpm.foundation, or give them a call at 855-537-4579. One of the programs supported by RPM in your area is the Central Carolina Community College, which has an Automotive Restoration Technology major that you might be interested in checking out (www.cccc.edu/curriculum/majors/ automotiverestoration; 800-682-8353). The RPM Foundation also has a number of apprenticeship programs that you might want to look into or apply for. Check them out at www.rpm.foundation/programs/ apprenticeship. You can also read more on our website (search articles for “RPM”). Good luck and study hard! We look forward to hearing about your future successes.

I just wanted Mike McNessor to know that I thoroughly enjoyed his column regarding the trials and tribulations of attempting to master the art of welding. I’m in a perpetual search for the Perfect Bead Of Weld before I go to that big Fab Shop In The Sky. Thanks for the smiles your column brought to me.
