2,000-mile delivery trip in a day launch
Boatbuilder Woody Metzger of First Light Boatworks, builder of a popular series of centre-console, clinker motor launches, had a rare chance to test one of his latest builds. The new owner, who lives in Florida, greenlighted the idea to take delivery of his boat by means of having Woody and crew drive it down to him 2,000 miles through the Intracoastal Waterway. The new boat, a so-called Pocasset variant, is based on the popular 26ft (7.9m) Monomoy, but adds a small cuddy cabin and a downeast-style hardtop and soft wheelhouse enclosure. “It’s a real bucket list voyage,” said Woody. “And the boat is far more capable just ate it up. And she only draws 15in (38cm), so we were able to take the inside route the whole way! It was the most amazing way to do the trip.” Woody completed the voyage in just 10 days, sometimes alone, sometimes with a colleague from the boatyard. “There are sections where you can only do five or six knots, but most of the time we cruised at 22-23, occasionally opening up to 31-32.”
