IN the archives of the oldest jeweller in Paris is a handwritten receipt recording the purchase of a bracelet by Marie Antoinette. Unlike the magnificent, five-row pearl necklace given to her by her mother, the Empress Maria Theresa—in which, the Duchess of Uzes remembered, ‘each pearl was the size of a hazelnut’—or her rivière of 30 huge, cushion-cut diamonds, both of which were broken up and sold following the French Revolution, the bracelet survives today
