TWISTS, BY AND large, aren’t meant to make the heart soar and the eyes moisten. They’re meant to is the glorious exception to this rule. Having bonded slowly across a hellish journey in which they suffered every indignity known to man, Steve Martin’s uptight exec, Neal Page, and John Candy’s exuberant shower-curtain-ring salesman, Del Griffith, have finally reached Chicago on Thanksgiving and, after an awkward hug, gone their separate ways. But then Neal, on the train home, begins to piece things together. He returns to the platform to find Del. Alone. No home to go to. The wife he often spoke of with tender affection, long dead.
