I was very fortunate – although I didn’t think so at the time…
Born in Warkworth in 1971, Edlin bypassed dinghy sailing and went straight into keelers by crewing for his uncle David Glasgow on the Townson Moonlight Korora. For the next six years most of his weekends were spent racing and cruising Korora and to this day he holds the 9.75m Moonlight design in high regard. “Pretty much a good yardstick on how a boat should handle – they’re a dream to sail.”
Following a month’s trial during school holidays, in 1985 boatbuilder Terry Bailey offered Edlin the then standard 9,000- hour, four-and-a-half year boatbuilding apprenticeship. As Edlin would soon discover, Bailey set and expected very high standards. “I was very fortunate –
