Looking ahead

As the country’s lockdown continues, I find myself wondering what effect Covid-19 will have on our deer populations and it has brought me to what I think are some interesting conclusions.

Firstly, let’s consider what the deer are doing while we are all stuck indoors. Well, for the most part, they are carrying on as normal and doing what deer do; eating, sorting out territories and sex groups and, as always, the muntjac are breeding!

What all of this means for us is that we see damage to things such as agricultural crops, growing timber and native flora. Under normal circumstances we, as deer managers, can keep on top of impacts by ensuring that the population of deer stays at a level where damage is minimised. We can
