A – ANTAR
I’m very disappointed Peter, that you suggested the Foden Alpha as they were still in production 14 years ago and they are not of classic status just yet. I did consider the Rotinoff Atlantic but thought you’d like the Thornycroft Antar. And the use of this shot taken in South Wales on 18th July 1987, reminds of the late Peter Lee. While down there on a visit to write a story on his fantastic model making talent, Peter later managed to talk us onto the nearby construction site of the Cardiff ring road. And we were then able to witness the trio of DMD’s ancient Antars moving concrete lumps up to 135 tonnes in weight. That was a great day for all concerned.
B – BORDERER
I’ll come back to your suggestion of the Leyland Beaver later on as it’s pushed back to fill a specific slot but also make way for the Atkinson Borderer. There are still many of these classics around but the most famous UK example – well it was certainly worked a lot longer than most – is the highly modified 1975 one operated by Terry Godbold of Metfield in Norfolk. I spent the day with Terry in June ’09 for a feature for Truck & Driver magazine and it was a joy to ride in such a classic which was still going very strong.
C – CALEDONIAN
