Blending Eastern mythology, Russian folktales, steampunk and , it’s set in the early 18th century, and sees Jason Flemyng’s cartographer encountering bizarre creatures, Chinese princesses and martial arts masters as he journeys to map the Russian Far East. We said: “Set-pieces are delivered with little cohesion, the CG is garish, the dubbing distracting… Long, frustrating, and deeply silly.” Finally, 1999’s (out now, Blu-ray) has made its UK HD debut. Ben Stiller, William H Macy and Hank Azaria star in this comedy about a bickering bunch of third-division superheroes (their powers include shovelling and farting, for instance) who take on Geoffrey Rush’s villainous Casanova Frankenstein. Brash but sweet-natured, it has the occasional big laugh, though its set-piece scraps are a little too chaotic to be satisfying.
