WE’VE HEARD IT all our lives, and it’s true that “grass equals bass,” but we have to reach beyond the basic concept and dig into what specific makeup, positioning and conditions make the “right grass.” Prospecting a football field of hydrilla will almost certainly deliver some level of success — eventually — but trading the more-is-better mentality for a targeted approach favors time efficiency.
Maybe it’s small rock clusters with grass on Lake St. Clair, or strips of hydrilla flanking the low-tide mark on a tidal fishery’s riprap. In any case, the takeaway here is that there’s almost always a particular setup that A) spotlights specific sections of a larger grassy area or B) leads you to a covert deal with the quality bites that build winning limits.
