UNRUH’S Walk Of Death

ON September 6, 1949, Howard Unruh, 28, of Camden, New Jersey, picked up a Luger P08 pistol, stepped outside of his two-storey apartment building and killed 13 people in 12 minutes in what was then the worst mass shooting in US history.

Unruh had become paranoid that his neighbours were talking about him behind his back, looked up Unruh in the phone book, found his number and called him. Unruh answered the phone in calm, clear voice. “I’m a friend,” said Buxton. “I want to know what they’re doing to you down there.” “They haven’t done anything to me yet,” said Unruh. “I’m doing plenty to them.” Asked how many he had killed, he said: “I don’t know yet. I haven’t counted them. But it looks like a pretty good score.” Why was he killing people? “I don’t know. I can’t answer that yet.”
